It’s My Birthday — Only by grace did I rise to smile this morning.

It’s my birthday. I am grateful to see this day, and I pray to see May 31, 2023. After 58 years on this earth, I find joy that I’m in relatively good health. I have a wonderful wife and a fantastic family and recently joined an incredible team of community builders at the South Seattle Emerald. I am truly blessed.

There must be a sense of humility in true thankfulness by acknowledging that only by grace did I rise to smile this morning rather than in tears. Today there are funerals in Uvalde, TX, to bury two ten-year-old children, Maite Rodriguez and Amerie Jo Garza. When they were born, I had already lived a good life of 48 years. Their deaths are senseless due to our nation’s fascination with violence. Innocent children are dead, and I am still here only through mercy because I am guilty of much.

I thank God(dess) for her grace. I recognize that I have the responsibility to do something to contribute to positive change in this time given me. I’m not sure what, but I must contribute as little or as much as I can. My joy to be alive today calls on me to do so.
